Yardball FAQ

Questions

What a Yardball is, and other good questions.

Everything worth knowing before your next catch — what it is, what it's made of, and who it's for. Throw it, catch it, no mitt required.

The Basics

What is a Yardball?

A ball and a glove in one. A hand-stitched leather ball made for playing catch. No glove, no bat. Bigger than a baseball, smaller than a softball, softer than both. Invented in Kansas City, built to break in with use.

How big is a Yardball?

A Yardball has a 10-inch circumference, roughly 3.2 inches in diameter. A little larger than a baseball, smaller than a softball.

How much does a Yardball weigh?

Roughly 4 ounces. Lighter than a baseball, heavy enough to throw like one.

What's a Yardball made of?

Milled harness leather on the outside, wool and cotton on the inside. 108 stitches, all by hand.

Where is Yardball made?

Hand-stitched in Kansas City, Missouri.

Who makes Yardball?

Yardball was invented by Thomas McIntyre & Chad Hickman and is made in Kansas City. It shares a workshop with Sandlot Goods.

Using It

Do I really not need a glove?

No glove. That's the whole idea. The leather is soft enough to catch with your bare hands and heavy enough to throw like a real ball.

Can kids use a Yardball?

Yes. Kids who can already play catch can play with a Yardball. Younger than that, use judgment — it's a leather ball, not a foam one.

Can I hit my Yardball with a baseball bat?

No. Repeated bat contact flattens the shape and softens the leather past the point of being a good catch ball. Yardball is a catch ball, not a baseball.

Is it safe to throw indoors?

Yes, carefully. It's light enough that most indoor throwing won't damage anything — but it's still a leather ball. Use judgment near lamps.

Can Yardball be used as a dog toy?

Yardball isn't built for teeth. The leather is meant to soften with throwing and catching, not chewing. A dog will get through it fast.

How do I break it in?

It comes broken in. The leather softens a little more every time you throw it, and the color deepens with use. The Yardball you have in a year will look better than the one you unbox today.

Care and Quirks

Why is my Yardball not perfectly round?

Yardballs are made of full-grain harness leather, which softens and shifts shape the more you throw it. A little asymmetry is the leather doing its job. It'll round back out, then soften again, then round back out. That's the whole point.

Can I get it wet?

A little rain or dew won't hurt it — it's leather. Don't soak it, don't leave it in a puddle, don't run it through the wash. If it gets wet, let it air-dry away from direct heat.

Does the color rub off on my hands?

The dyed leathers (Burgundy, Black, and most LPRs) can transfer a little color when they're brand new, especially in heat or with sweat. It settles down after the first few games of catch. The Natural and Glove Tan don't transfer.

How do I clean a Yardball?

Wipe it down with a dry cloth or a barely-damp one. For deeper care, a tiny amount of leather conditioner works — the same kind you'd use on a glove or a boot. Skip soap, skip water-soaking, skip the washing machine.

How long does a Yardball last?

It softens with use and the leather darkens the more you throw it. There's no expiration. A Yardball you've thrown for years looks better than one you just got.

Colors and Editions

What colors does Yardball come in?

The regular run is Glove Tan, Natural, Burgundy, and Black. We also release Limited Product Releases about six times a year — unusual leathers and one-time colorways. When an LPR is gone, it's gone.

What's a Limited Product Release (LPR)?

A unique leather or colorway we make in a small batch, usually around six times a year. The runs are small because we're small. When they're gone, they're gone — the next one will be something different.

Buying and Shipping

How long does shipping take?

Most orders ship within 2-4 business days from Kansas City. You'll get a tracking number when it goes out.

Can I return my Yardball?

Yes. Like-new products can be returned within 30 days of purchase, in their original condition and packaging. Return shipping is on you — unless the product shows up damaged, in which case we cover it. Second-quality items, custom orders, and gift cards are final sale.

Can I get a Yardball with my logo or initials on it?

For one-off personalization, we offer Yardballs through our Yardlab Customizer, where you can add names or initials in a variety of fonts. For bulk orders with a logo, see our corporate gifting page — small or large runs, hand-stitched the same way as the regular line.

Do you do corporate or bulk orders?

Yes. Most corporate gifts end up in a drawer. This one ends up on a desk, on a lawn, in someone's hand. See the corporate gifting page for lead times and pricing, or send us a note.
